  1. RETURN TO SCHWEINFURT

  3. The American Eighth Air Force leadership 
  4. considered the first raid on Schweinfurt
  5. a success and that the ball bearing
  6. industry had been dealt a severe blow.
  7. But photo reconnaissance showed that 
  8. repairs were quickly being made, so on
  9. October 14, 1943 a return raid was planned.
  10. For the American B-17 crews who flew this
  11. day, the mission proved to be as night-
  12. marish as the first Schweinfurt raid on
  13. August 17.

  15. As the B-17s crossed the Dutch coast, they
  16. were set upon by wave after wave of 
  17. German fighters.  The escorting American 
  18. fighters were inadequate in number and 
  19. could only defend the bombers to the 
  20. German border.  Once the American fighters 
  21. had turned for home, the German fighters 
  22. intensified their attacks and continued 
  23. them all the way to Schweinfurt.  A total 
  24. of 60 B-17s were lost to the German inter-
  25. ceptors.  The bombers did heavy damage to 
  26. the ball bearing plants but the bomber 
  27. losses were crippling.  At this loss rate 
  28. the American bomber offensive would cease 
  29. to exist.  This raid was the final confir-
  30. mation that long range escort was needed 
  31. to protect the bombers all the way to 
  32. their target.

  36. Flying a Bf 109 from JG 26, intercept the
  37. American attack as it crosses the Dutch
  38. coast.  The B-17 formation in your sector
  39. is being escorted by P-47s.  Your mission
  40. is to tangle with the P-47s drawing them
  41. off from the B-17s, so that the FW 190s
  42. following your attack can hammer the 
  43. bombers.
